Zip ties have become essential when hanging outfits for a consignment event.  I always make sure to have a zip-tie container on hand. Using zip ties is one of the easiest, most convenient ways how to hang outfits for consignment events.

Using One Hanging Slot for Consignment Events

Besides saving on closet space, hanging multiple clothes on one hanger is especially helpful for sales when participating in a consignment event! The customer at the consignment event will be able to pick up your outfit on one hanger, inspect it thoroughly, and decide to purchase it! Also, using one hanger is equal to one consignment hanger space at consignment events. As a consigner, you may only be allowed 100 hanger spaces, so selling outfits together is the best decision for your sales! If you are unfamiliar with consignment events, read all about it here.

  1. Line up the second hanger to the base of the hook on the top hanger.
  2. Then wrap the zip-tie around both sides of the top hanger’s hook and tighten the zip tie.
  3. Cut off the excess zip-tie.

There you have it! If you wanted to attach another piece of clothing, you can attach the 3rd hanger o the base of the 2nd hanger’s hook.

How to Hang Pants on A Hanger for Consignment Events

Do Not Use a Tagging Gun to Attach Multiple Clothing Items

I do not recommend using a tagging gun to attach multiple clothes. The weight of the clothes will cause large holes where the tagging needles are and can be pulled from the consignment rack.

There are so many times, when I want to attach outfits together only to find the pants, do not have a belt loop. Think leggings, track pants, sweatpants. Here is how to hang pants without belt loops on a hanger.

  1. Thread the zip-tie to the base of the hanger.
  2. Thread safety pin where there is stitching on both sides of the pants.
  3. Pull zip ties through each safety pin and around the hanger’s edge.
  4. Tighten the safety pin.
  5. Cut off the excess zip tie.

And Voila! You have attached a pair of pants to a shirt hanger!

How to Pair Clothes to Sell on One Hanger

1. Only Pair Clothes Together That Are The Same Size

Before hanging an outfit together on one hanger,  make sure to look at the size on each of the tags.  If you have a size 4T and a size 5T, you cannot attach and sell them together on one hanger.  Make sure the tags on each of the clothing say the same size (ex. 4T on The Children’s Place shirt and 4T on Cat & Jack bottoms).

2. Brand Names Do Not Have to Match

However, you may want to double-check that information with the consignment company just to be sure. If I do hang an outfit that are different brands, I will make sure it is shown on the description on the tag. If one of the pieces of clothing fall off the hanger, it may be harder to locate it if they are different brands.

3. Hang Outfits or by Multiples

You do not only have to hang outfits on one hanger, you can hang multiple of one kind of clothing such as multiple pairs of pants or shirts.

We always seem to have a lot of boys pants. I love matching pants such as track pants and sweat pants, on one hanger. (And psst…boys clothes sell quickly at consignment events so if you find some boys clothes in amazing condition at a garage sale for a very cheap price…grab them and make money!)

This may seem like a waste of a hanger.

Why Not Put the Pants on the Lower Bar of the Hanger?

Some consignment events only allow one piece of clothing per hanging spot so, that requires you to get creative.

How to Secure Dresses or Tank Tops with Spaghetti Straps

When you have a dress or a tank top with spaghetti straps to sell at a consignment event, make sure to secure it to the hanger so it does not fall off.  Zip ties are great for this since it is so fast, easy to assemble and cheap!

  1. You simply attach each zip tie to each strap. Pull to secure and trim the zip tie.

It is important to take this extra step when preparing your clothes for consignment events.

Reminder: Consignment events are a public sale where hundreds of families come to pick out clothing for their children.  Sometimes the clothes fall off the hanger, so taking this extra step is worth it.

Add the Cost of the Hanger to the Selling Price

  • Always add $0.10 for your hanger’s cost to your item’s selling price. You do not get items back after your item has been purchased at a consignment event.

How to Find Free Hangers

  • Use hangers from your closet or your family’s closet; even people on Facebook like to give them away.  There are also clothing retailers that will let you take them at the end of the night.  Ask around; don’t be shy.
  • Any hanger is acceptable if you do not mind giving it with the item. You do not get hangers back from a consignment event.

Buy Hangers in Bulk

  • If you need to purchase hangers, buy in bulk.
  • Storesupply.com has bulk hangers for super cheap.

How Do You Stack Clothes Hangers?

If you need to organize clothes hangers, I found the best way to do this is to put them stacked neatly in a box or with zip ties.

Secure the zip ties around the longest part of the hanger, and they will stay together.

What is the Easiest Way to Transport Hanging Outfits When Going to a Consignment Event?

When moving my items to the consignment event, I never use containers or cardboard boxes for clothes, especially outfits. I always stack hangers and cover them with a clear recycling bag to protect them from stains or damage during transport before they are put out on the sales floor.

Here Is How I Use Clear Plastic Recycling Bags and Stack Outfits on Hangers for Consignment Events:

  1. Lay each outfit down flat with the hangers attached.
  2. Line up all of the top hanger hooks.
  3. With blue tape, tape all of the hooks together. You can also use string or a ribbon if you do not have any blue tape on hand.
  4. Take a clear recycling bag and make a hole in the middle of the seam of the bag.
  5. Push the hanger hooks through the seam.
  6. Straighten out the clear bag to cover the rest of the outfits and tie a knot at the bottom.

More About Hangers

Ten to twenty years ago, felt space saving hangers came out in the stores. I remember everyone buying them because they saved space, they looked nice, and the felt would keep your clothes from falling off the hanger. Unforunately, they have turned out not to be that great. Sadly, I cannot recommend the felt space saving hangers.

Do Felt Space-Saving Hangers Really Work?

Space-saving hangers do what they claim to, they save space. However, they are not durable or long-lasting.

Felt Hangers are Fragile and Should Not Be Wedged

I have broken so many felt hangers just from trying to pull my clothes off the hanger like I have trained myself to do with plastic hangers most of my life. And the plastic hangers rarely broke! And if they did, oh well, they are cheap and easy to find and replace.

Since the space-saving hangers are most likely stuffed in your closet with all the other clothes, they are just about wedged in and push themselves together. So, when you pull down a shirt quickly, the felt hanger can break on the bottom or the top of the hanger. Sometimes the felt hanger can break on the very top at the base of the hook.

The felt hangers were almost like a luxury item to have in your closet, and now I know why. It was not just the look and feel of the hangers, it was because they broke easily and were expensive to replace.

Switch to Wooden Hangers

Organization is important to me, especially closet organization. Also, I have always wanted to have wooden hangers in my closet. So, we made the switch to wooden hangers.

Wooden hangers can be pricey but I like to wait for a holiday sale to get a discount. Amazon has very nice wooden hangers. We got ours on Black Friday and it was worth it! We have had our wooden hangers for several years, and nothing has broken. They fit nicely in the closet and prevent crowding or clothes getting wedged on the railing.

Wooden hangers also are great for heavier clothing items such as jackets, coats, and snowsuits.
